The 2026 Home-Loan Checklist for First-Time Buyers

Everything you need in order before you apply — credit score targets, documents, and how to compare offers without overpaying on interest.

Before you apply

A strong home-loan application starts months before you sign anything. Lenders look at your credit score, income stability, and existing obligations.

1. Know your numbers

Aim for a credit score above 750. Keep your EMI-to-income ratio under 40%. Use our EMI calculator to model scenarios.

2. Documents to keep ready

  • PAN and Aadhaar
  • Last 3 months' salary slips / 2 years' ITR
  • 6 months' bank statements
  • Property documents and the builder's RERA registration

3. Compare the real cost

Don't chase the headline rate. Compare processing fees, prepayment terms, and whether the rate is fixed or floating.
